The Borough Wide Community Network (BWCN) is working in partnership with Wigan in Bloom to encourage members of the community to attend events to learn more about how to go about the planting of bulbs, hanging baskets and other similar items with a view to returning to their neighbourhoods and sharing these skills with family, friends and neighbours. Some fun events are planned in parks around the borough and the other events will be held at Tudor House, 8 Liverpool Road, Hindley, Wigan. The events are free but people must 'book in' as numbers are limited. Priority will be given to members of the BWCN if demand exceeds supply, and all children must be supervised by an adult/carer/guardian.

The schedule of events is as follows. Pre-booking for events at Tudor House in Hindley is essential, whilst it is strictly first come first served for events in the park:

24 July 2009 – Mesnes Park Wigan 11am – 3pm - Craft Events - to include painting clay plant pots and planting these with flowers, plus other environmentally friendly craft events and play activities.

7 August 2009 – Pennington Park 11am – 3pm - Craft Day for children @ Pennington Park, Leigh – same as Wigan Fun Event (above).

29 September 2009 – Tudor House Hindley - 6pm – 8pm – Hanging Baskets for Autumn showing. Participants will be shown how to plant a hanging basket for the autumn season and then ‘have a go’ at planting their own hanging basket. They will learn about the types of plants suitable for the season and how to care for the hanging basket throughout the autumn/winter months. TO BOOK YOUR PLACE RING 07535 463 689.

27 October 2009 – Tudor House Hindley - 6pm – 8pm - Bulb Planting Demonstration – completed pots to be donated to charity. Participants will learn about different types of bulbs, how to plant different types of bulbs, and how to care for these. TO BOOK YOUR PLACE RING 07535 463 689.

17 November 2009 - Tudor House Hindley –6pm – 8pm - Review of last 4 months and planning for 2010. Participants will be involved in an interactive workshop and be asked to give feedback on events so far and also the sort of events/talks/activities that they would like to become involved in for the future. They will be asked to contribute ideas on how to make this project sustainable – ie contributions towards the events, fund raising etc. They will be asked to identify training needs - for both personal/aspirational and organisational needs. 8 December 2009 - Tudor House, Hindley – 6pm – 8pm - Make a Christmas Wreath. Participants will be shown how to recycle the unwanted bottom branches of a Christmas Tree and create a Scandinavian type seasonal wreath for their front door. TO BOOK YOUR PLACE RING 07535 463 689.

19 January 2010 – Tudor House, Hindley – 6pm – 8pm - Hyacinth Workshop – getting ready for Mothers Day. Participants will be shown different methods of planting hyacinth bulbs – in compost and in water and how to recycle plastic bottles and containers as planters. 16 February 2010 – Tudor House, Hindley – 6pm – 8pm - Speaker (Wigan in Bloom) and Review of Flower Power 2009 and preparation for 2010. TO BOOK YOUR PLACE RING 07535 463 689.

23 March 2010 – Tudor House, Hindley - 6pm – 8pm – Planting of wildflower seeds and benefits of attracting insects into garden. TO BOOK YOUR PLACE RING 07535 463 689.

20 April 2010 – Tudor House Hindley – 6pm – 8pm - Sunflower seed competition and Grow Your Own Herbs. Sunflower seed Competition – participants will paint plant pots and plant sunflower seed with a view to seeing who will have the tallest sunflower. Grow your own herbs – participants and will be shown how to make good use of their kitchen windowsill and other small areas – not necessarily outdoors – to be able to grow herbs. 1 June 2010 – Jubilee Park 11am – 3pm - Hanging Baskets for Summer Request return of last year's baskets to highlight benefits of recycling. Workshops similar to September but with seasonal plants.

15 June 2010 - Tudor House Hindley - 6pm – 8pm – Speaker - Getting involved on a wider scale – encouraging participants to undertake activities in their area in conjunction with their local Township – bulb planting etc. TO BOOK YOUR PLACE RING 07535 463 689.
